I recently tried the very popular and highly Instagrammed boba sensation, Tiger Sugar, in its Rowland Heights, CA location. This is the only Tiger Sugar in the west coast, so I knew I had to try it. However, I was not a huge fan.

I ordered one of their most popular drinks, the Black Sugar Boba Milk, which simply tasted like sugar and whole milk. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I thought it would be more sweet and flavorful, especially since it looked so interesting and the line for it was out the door. The boba was also disappointing; it was chewy, but plain. At most boba shops, you can adjust the drink’s sweetness levels and ice, but Tiger Sugar does not do modifications.
The shop itself has a very modern vibe, with its black exterior and bright yellow touches. However, it has limited parking so expect to possibly struggle a bit, especially if it’s a busy day. There also isn’t any seating inside, besides a bench by the drink counter, so be prepared to wait outside. My friend and I waited at least 15 minutes for our drinks and we went on a week day.

If you do decide to go, be your own judge! It has high reviews on Yelp, but for me personally, it was definitely over-hyped. I’m open to giving Tiger Sugar another shot, but I will make sure to order something else, like the green tea latte or black sugar black tea.
